CERVÉLO P5 TIME TRIAL BIKE
ENZO FERRARI WAS FAMOUSLY QUOTED AS SAYING, “AERODYNAMICS IS FOR PEOPLE WHO DON’T KNOW HOW TO BUILD ENGINES.” A pretty hubristic statement when read with the benefit of hindsight, but while the great man may have lived to see the day where he had to eat those words in the F1 paddocks, he may have had a point when it came to bikes.
When you consider that at a speed of 25 kph, the effort required to add another 5 kph an hour is thrice what it would have taken you to get there, you begin to understand the obsession that companies like Cervélo have when it comes to slicing through every cyclist’s nemesis: wind.
And there is no better poster boy for that obsessive compulsion than the new Cervélo P5 time trial bike—a bike that the Canadian firm is boldly claiming to be the “most advanced and most aerodynamic triathlon bike.”
In fact, the company is so confident that they have chosen to run under the slogan, “Simply faster.” Which basically sums up what every professional cyclist wakes up in the morning for.
The P5 is offered in two delicious flavors. Both use the same frame, but one features a fork designed for triathlons while the other has a fork that complies with UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) rules.
You can choose just the frame set, but for those happy to throw down the US$6,500 for the complete bike, you get the new Aduro aerobar produced by 3T that’s also claimed to be the most aerodynamically advanced out there, plus the incredible new RT8 hydraulic rim brakes from Magura that were designed exclusively for the P5 to be lighter and more powerful than anything else available, plus redesigned storage and hydration systems.
